Intermittent Clutch Engagement - 95 Ford Ranger
Question: I have an Intermittent problem on my 95 Ford Ranger. The system works good most of the time, then it quits working. I don't think it's freezing up because sometimes the clutch does not engage on start up after sitting for an extended period. Are there any common problems with this system that causes intermittent clutch operation? When the system is working, it provides vent temperature in the mid 40's.
This question seems quite common on the mid to late 90's Ford Ranger.
The problem seems to associated with the WOT (wide open throttle) relay.
You can find this relay in the underhood fuse/relay center. When the system act up next time, lightly tap on the WOT relay. If the clutch engages while tapping, suspect a bad relay.
This would also be a good time to look for any corrosion on electrical connections on the A/C system. Corrosion in these areas may cause a voltage drop to the coil. It would also be a good idea to check your compressor clutch gap. This is another common cause for intermittent clutch engagement The Ford FS10 compressor clutch gap is very easy to adjust. This compressor clutch is shim adjustable. You won't need any special pullers, but you may need to add or remove shims.
