I haven't retrofitted a Volvo but a friend did many retrofits. As "candidates" among imports, he rated Honda best and Volvo worst. He felt their condendsers and evaporators were too small to do a good job with R134A.
As a group, RWD cars don't retro as well as FWD either, since they don't have as much airflow over the condenser at idle with their engine-driven fans.
So, just IMHO, I would keep your Volvo on R12 unless I was well committed to living with noticeably reduced a/c performance.
